I wanted to share with you my sadness at losing Hedy =E2=80=94 our =
memory on this list! I send you the few words I sent to Hedwig=E2=80=99s =
son Michael and grandson Shachar. Shachar read them at today=E2=80=99s =
funeral. =20
I wish I could be with you today to join in the memory, admiration and =
celebration of Hedy that you are all sharing. I=E2=80=99ve known and =
loved Hedy my entire life =E2=80=93 she and my mother Lotte met and =
became life-long friends when they were five-year old girls living =
around the corner from each other in Czernowitz. Their friendship lasted =
and became stronger and deeper through their adolescence, the war, their =
marriages to Bubi and Carl, close friends in their own right. It lasted =
through years of raising Paul, Michael and me in Ploiesti and =
Bucharest, and through their old age visits in New Hampshire and Haifa. =
In her nineties, I never saw my mother as animated and happy as when she =
was on the phone with her Hedika, or, better, when they saw each other =
in person and stayed up nights exchanging memories and gossip, and =
bragging about their grandchildren.
Losing Hedy, I have lost that last live link to a world that has now =
truly disappeared =E2=80=93 a world she remembered and knew how to evoke =
in every minute detail. And we have all lost the pleasure of seeing her =
or hearing her voice that bubbled over with energy and anticipation of =
the next thing. But Hedy has given us all so much that will outlast her. =
I=E2=80=99m not speaking just of her many books and publications and =
their immeasurable contribution. I am speaking of the curiosity and =
joie de vivre that she embodied, and of the model she set for how to =
live a full rich life with joy, warmth, pleasure and an open mind and =
heart.=20
