Hedwig was a childhood friend of my mom's (she always referred to her as He=
di Langhaus), and she helped me identify my mother's childhood home in Czer=
nowitz when I went visiting. =C2=A0Last year I met Michael Brenner at a tec=
hnology convention and after some discussion I realized he was Hedwig's son=
. =C2=A0Small world. What an impressive personality she was! [Gershon Schatzberg]

  =20
Dear friends,

Today I was informed by a good friend of hers, Christel Wollman-Fiedler,=20
a photographer and author from Berlin, that our 98-year old Hedwig=20
Brenner, our doyenne, passed away last night after a short fight between=20
life and death. She has been a wonderful person, with a strong and=20
lively personality, interested in people's lives. She had a phantastic=20
memory, remembering her years in Czernowitz and knew at least half of=20
the population, she could tell you=C2=A0 hundreds of names and who they wer=
e=20
and what they had been doing...Christel has spent every year visiting=20
Hedwig, staying with her for one month every time, discussing with her,=20
helping and opening a window to the future.. She published a few=20
pamphlets=C2=A0 and wrote about her in "Die Stimme" and was notably the=20
person who recommended Hedwig for the high German and=C2=A0 Austrian Medals=
=20
of Honour a few years ago. All this so late in Hedwig's life.

During the war, with an enormous courage, which only youth and=20
determination can give, Hedwig went to the German Kommandatur in=20
Czernowitz and asked to speak to the Kommandant.=C2=A0 By an incredible=20
coincidence, the Kommandant had studied in Prague at the same time as=20
Hedwig's husband, and had known him! She thus achieved the release of=20
her husband.=C2=A0 A frightening and beautiful story which she loved to tel=
l.

Hedwig has spent many years of her later life, writing several books=20
about her life, about Czernowitz, about many people she had met during=20
her long existence....And then she started writing biographies of Jewish=20
women in ...painting, architecture, etc. A big task and she did it=20
wonderfully. We can be so proud of her.

Up to the last weeks, she loved talking, interested in a multitude of=20
things and as we know, her book on" Jewish Women in Music and Dance" has=20
just been published. She had spent the last years of her life hearing=20
and seeing badly, but in spite of this had worked continuously to finish=20
this, not her last project. She intended to start a new one on Jewish=20
actresses. She was full of life, loved to entertain, especially persons=20
with Czernowitz ties, made her famous Cz. Schmettentorte,=C2=A0 and even=20
yesterday she posted a comment on our List. There is still much to tell=20
about her. Many follow-ups from persons who have known her personally=20
will probably follow soon. A big loss.
