Dear Paul
The Leviim had another more important duty to perform: they had to teach
the children Tora Which meant to read and write. That they succeeded in
their mission we can see that Gideon, that was a simple son of a peasant
could write, because it is written that after the victory he wrote
everything that happened. on another place it is written: even a child
could read it, which means that children in general could read.
Here I would like to remark that in history we learn that the Phenicians
thought the Greeks the alphabet but the Phenicians learned from the
Jewish people.
It is now assumed that the phonetic script was invented in the Sinai
Peninsula and the
Jewish people (all of them or only the tribe Levi as is now assumed)
brought it with them. In Egypt where the script was very complicated and
difficult so only a small group were learned enough to read and write
but with the invention of the phonetic alphabet it became so easy that
everyone could learn it easy.
