In Jewish religion there are 3 classes; Cohanim, Leviim and Israelim. The
Cohanim are "supposed" to be the descendants of Aaron, the first "kohen"
priest and High Priest "Kohen Gadol." The were the clerics at the Temple
and performed the sacrifices. The Levites, the descendants of Levi, the son
of Jacob, and were the assistants of the Kohanim in their performance of
the rituals. Both clans lived from taxes paid by the people. Their special
status is transmitted from father to son.
Nowadays, the kohanim and the Leviim enjoy some honorary privileges, but
also restrictions; for example a "kohen" cannot marry a divorced woman, and
that is the custom/law in Israel.
