Dear Bruce,
as far as I remember: all together it were 81 jewish soldiers who died at the first Russian invasion in particularly the surroundings of Czernowitz like Bojan and Mamaliga. I found no indication, that it were just soldiers from the Austrian army. In 1928 the Romanian authorities exhumed the corpses and brought them all together to the jewish cemetery Czernowitz and erected the concrete tombstones. I have no idea, when they were removed - might be by Romanian fascists or later by the soviets. In context of the city s 600 anniversary and the reconstruction works they found 28 of those tombstones behind the factory, next to Zelena Street (
http://bit.ly/2kETFt6) and brought them back to the jewish cemetery. This was financed by the Austrian government (Kriegsgraeberfuersorge - in cooperation between the Austrian ministry of interior, the Austrian Schwarzem Kreuz (black cross) and the new fount black cross Czernowitz especially Serhij Osachuk - the same team who made the reconstructions of the „big“ monument for the Austrian-hungarian army at Olympia Street).
Best, b
and a little offtopic: at one of the christian cemeteries of Storojinetz is a monument for the fallen soldiers of WW I, which was erected by Austrian authorities and afterwards redesigned by the Romanians: they changed the plate into Romanian and put an eagle on top - a static miracle.
