Dear Fred, Bianca, Mimi, Cornel, Berti, Mordecai and Gaby R,
Thank you for your comments and testimonies on this dramatic moment in the history of our families. It is fascinating for us who were born after these events to "listen" to you.
Here is my contribution to the subject:
My father, Dr. Josef Ehrenkranz, a 40 years old refugee living with his wife and little son in the village of Aleksikovo, not far from Stalingrad, wrote in his diary on March 31, 1944 :
My translation:
Yesterday on March 30 ,at 8 hours in the evening, Moscow Radio announced that the Red Army took by storm and liberated the city of Czernowitz. With tears in my eyes I listened to Stalin’s proud military command about the forming of the “Czernowitzer (Army) Divisions” and to the sounds of the Kremlin- bells interrupted by salute-shots to victory from 220 guns. The greeting was heard all over our big fatherland .
Cernauti is free. But… the frightening shadow of the tens of thousands of innocents murdered presses us down, does not allow us to rejoice…as our dearest people are probably among the victims.
[ almost our entire big family survived- we were lucky]
Happy Peaceful Spring Holydays to all,
Irene

The reason there was the big bang was that the town water tower was blown up, that happened twice. I remember we had to get water from the well in the School in the Stefaniegasse for some time.
