It was early morning=2C and I do not recall the date=2C but only yesterd=
ay or the day before had we seen through the drawn curtains the Romanian=
troops who had evacuated the =22Cavallerie Kasserne=22 just west of us =
on the way to Rosch=2E I watched at the window with my parents=2C fearfu=
l of some last moment atrocity by them=2C when suddenly we perceived a s=
trange figure=2C very likely of Asian origin=2C walking carefully=2C fro=
m Rotkirch-gasse=2C on the opposite sidewalk=2C looking in all direction=
s at the same time=2C but with a completely confident stride=2E
He wore=C2=A0the typical Red-Army winter padded quilted jacket=2C wore t=
heir typical felt-boots=2C and had in his hand the Red-Army Shpagin roun=
d-canister machine-gun=2E There was no Romanian or German soldier in sig=
ht=2E He continued his walk southward to the Austria-Platz without any i=
nterference from any hidden fascist of Nazi adherent=2E
It was an eerie sight=2C but at the same time an electrifying few minute=
s=2E We realized that this was a Red-Army scout and that we were =E2=80=9C=
FREE=E2=80=9D at last=2E No more tours of neighbors being herded Northwa=
rds towards the Ghetto and the Railway station=2C to Transnistria=2E
Well=2C we realized soon enough that =E2=80=9CFREE=E2=80=9D really meant=
to escape asap to Romania and from there to Palestine=2E
Regrettably=2C my uncle was drafted a month later and survived the fierc=
e battles all through Poland and Germany=2C to fall on the night of 1st =
May at the entrance to the Reichstag that was being taken over that nigh=
t by the Red Army 171st and 150th rifle regiments=2Eof the 3rd Shock Arm=
