Subject: [Cz-L] Czernowitz - last week of April 2017

Dear All,

Last week I was in Czernowitz and I would like to inform you about
what I saw.
The city seems to be booming, mostly with Ukrainian tourists.
It was difficult to obtain lodging at the "Magnat Lux" or "AllureInn"
where I have stayed before,
but there is a new hotel on the Siebenbuerger Strasse / Holovna named
"Panska Dir",
which is brand new, actually construction is not yet finished. It is
even more luxurious than the AllureInn,
but not as centrally located, it is very close to the cathedral, and
a room costs about $40 per night,
including breakfast.

The Jewish cemetery looks in better shape than I have ever seen it
before.
Some areas are completely clear of all vegetation except for grass
and low growing annual weeds.
The paths are almost all clear. Unfortunately there are still some
parts of the cemetery
which require a lot of work; trees and bushes cut and removed and the
remains of the cut trunks
treated with herbicide. I some areas in which the trees and bushes
were cut,
but the remains of the trunks not properly treated with herbicides,
new growth has sprouted
from the roots and is now quite tall, but still thin enough to be
easily cut.

As to the supposed "vandalism" at the cemetery, we could see none.
The gravestone which was lying on top of the graves of the soldiers
killed in WW1,
was obviously the tombstone from an adjacent grave. It had not been
properly
attached to its base and had obviously fallen off.
The people who are working on the reconstruction of the Leichenhalle
(ceremonial Hall)
HAD damaged the little fence surrounding the graves of the Straucher
family.
We talked about this with Rabbi Mendel Glissenstein and hopefully
this will not be repeated in the future.

I was explained to us by the curator of the Jewish museum, that the
reason for the decision
to locate the Holocaust Museum in the Leichenhalle is a financial one.
Despite Josef Zissel's desire to build a Holocaust museum, he could
not obtain the money to do so.
Since the German government's decision to preserve and renovate
Jewish cemeteries in central Europe
includes the preservation and reconstruction of buildings which were
part of these cemeteries
it is now possible to use the building, or at least part of it to
house the Holocaust Museum.

I took no photographs on this trip, but Sasha Wolloch did and he will
make them available
in the next one or two weeks.

All the very best, enjoy and celebrate Israel's Independence day,

                           Mimi
