I wonder if the Jewish High School (Liceul) where I learned in 1947 still
existed at your times.

Dear Edgar,
You are so young !
What about me?
When you were born ,I just got ready to start "high school" ( 5th grade) at
"our" German School. We still went to the old historical school-building
next to the Lutheran church. During the Easter vacation in April 1959 we did
some "schlepping". We ( students, teachers, parents) helped to move
everything ( furniture , the library, the 100 years archive, the
kindergarten) to the new address. The old historical building was demolished
to make room to the ugly blocks surrounding the big modern Congress Hall (
3000 seats)
The small old building we see in your pictures was hiding next to the huge
"Radio Palace". I spent the next happy 5 years in the class-room on the
ground floor. You can see the windows in the picture.
I recognize your lady-teacher ( forgot her name). A few years earlier she
was a very enthusiastic and active Young Communist, the leader (commander?)
of the "pioneers" organization of our school.
To get "on topic": I think that my generation was the peak of the
"bukowiner/czernowitzer baby-boomers" who went to this school. It was meant
as a school for the German minority in Bucharest. Several years after
"repatriation" the Czernowitzer parents discovered they had a legal right to
send their children to this school because they came from German speaking
families.
In the '50ies there were at least 4 Jewish- Bukowinian teachers, my mother
and aunt amongst them.
If you are interested I can contribute with some pictures to your blog.
Best wishes ,
Irene
P.S. What is going on today in the building? Is it still a school?

Czernowitzers...
After WW2 many Bukovinians "repatriated" to Bucharest, as an interim stage
on their way into the free world. For me, born in Bucharest in 1957, it
meant German Kindergarten and German School, located at this time on
Nuferilor Street. Please join me to school at an interval of half of a
century

and let's (re-)discover the school building and its vicinity. Nothing but
decay, mud, penetrating smell, poverty? Maybe, but at the same time, since I
spent my childood here, and it was not an unhappy one at all, l'm
associating nostalgic feelings with these streetscapes. What about you? I
wonder how many of our List members went to this school too?!
