Dear Mimi,

Thank you for your straightforward response.

My family lived through the war in Egypt. They missed the horrors of Europe but clearly suffered other trials. The family was fractured by the escape from Egypt, with siblings ending up on different continents; I have never met most of my first cousins.

The challenge for my generation, I think, is to step past the question of "what happened?" and finds other respectful ways rebuild a sense of family. This, after all, is what the questions are for... showing love and respect to the amazing people whose survival gave us our lives. And of course, there's the futile dream of holding them tight enough to make the memories go away and leave them in peace.

Warm regards, and thank you for your honest response,

Shula
