Dear Bruce, dear Czernowitzers,

Thanks for bringing up the question of Mandyczewski's ties to the Jewish community in Czernowitz.

A month ago I held in my hands a photography of the sixteen-year-old Mandyczewski on which he wrote a dedication to a childhood friend: “Meinem theuren Freunde Isaak Baltinester zur Erinnerung von Eusebius Mandyczewsky, Czernowitz am 11.9. 1873.” Given the modest means of the Mandyczewski family and the expenses for a photo at that time we can safely assume that they were close friends.

Aside from that childhood friend, Mandyczewski’s relations to Jewish Czernowitzers were manifold. They range from the dedication of his most ambitious composition, the cantata “Im Buchenland”, to his friend and patron Victor Korn, to his support for Czernowitzers Julie Salter and Ludwig Rottenberg when they studied in Vienna.

Here’s in an example of the involvement of Jewish Czernowitzers in a premiere of Mandyczewski’s music (the essay is from my edition of the piece):

Best regards,
Dietmar
