My husband's grandfather's name was Louis MEERBAUM GRINBERG (changed
to GREENBERG in the U.S.). He was from Kolomiya, or possibly from a
town just outside Kolomiya, called Grodziec bei Kolomei (this is not
the Grodziec in Poland).
I believe that Meerbaum must have been the maiden name of Louis
Meerbaum Grinberg's mother - her first name was something like Bitte.
She married Gabriel Shaya Grinberg, Louis Greenberg's father (for whom
my husband is named).
At least in the U.S., MEERBAUM is a rather uncommon surname.
I am aware that this is a very remote possibility - but because of the
rarity of the name Meerbaum, and the fact that Bruce Reisch wrote that
some of the Czernowitz list-serve members are related to Selma
Meerbaum - I wonder if anyone on the list might know something about
the extended Meerbaum family, and whether any of them lived in the
vicinity of Kolomiya.
Any small bit of information is always welcome - I have traced a
number of people through what looked like irrelevant details.
