New Book Awakens Romanians to Hidden Holocaust Past

A Moldovan historian’s new book presents the ‘unpleasant pages’ of
Romanian and Moldovan history and their role in the Holocaust.
Diana Dumitru’s book opens with the testimony of a Holocaust survivor:
“They were helping the Germans. They were burning houses and people...
They were worse than the SS.”
‘They’ were the ethnic Romanians of present-day Moldova, a territory
controlled during World War II by Romania and its Nazi-allied dictator
Ion Aontonescu.
Dumitru’s recently-published Neighbours in Troubled Times recounts in at
times unbearable detail the participation of Romanians in the
persecution, deportation and murder of their Jewish neighbours between
1941 and 1945.
The product of 10 years of research, Neighbours in Troubled Times
challenges the tendency in Romania and Moldova to downplay local
involvement in the execution of between 45,000 and 60,000 Jews and the
deaths of another 100,000 to 200,000 in the ghettos and concentration
camps of Moldova’s Transnistria.
