Dear Frances,
Your mention of your grandfather and grandmother's names rang a bell in my
mind. I went to the 1936 census of Czernowits and - lo - a person names
Rosner Isac lived indeed in the house I lived throughout my childhood - Cuza
Voda (or Alt gasse) 7b. There is also another Rosner Isac mentioned, who
lived on 11 Noviembre (Franzens gasse) 39. Both are registered as
"commerciants", which is a very wide term in Romanian, including
business-men, traders, owners of little or large shops. So I must have known
the family of the Rosner Isaac who lived in our house, but I was a child
(born in 1933) and do not remember his or his wife's face, as I do not
remember the faces of two more neighbours. I remember only 3 of them - the
Auerbach family, the Blum family, and the family of the concierge (who
returned from Transnistria). And I do not know if this Rosner family is your
grandpa and grandma. But perhaps these few data might be of help in your
research. Incidentally, the same tow Rosners Isaacs are mentioned in the
1927 census but at other addresses.Have a look at the preceding censuses
(you will find them on our blog) and perhaps you will find an additional
clue.
Just in case I am sending you in a separate mail a picture of the house; the
street name is now Lesi Ukrainki and the number is now 19.
Regards
