My uncle Dr. Leopold Fischler came back from Tashkent in Sommer 1944.
You had to get a komandirovka
to travel by train, and that was given (or not) on diff.conditions of
age, being necessary to local authorities,
political official "healthy" orientation, or just having the right
connections. They came practically without any means.
To everyone's surprise, the key to their 3 room app. they had taken
with them 3 years ago was still opening the lock,
and all the furniture incl. his 2000 book library in German was still
there. The Rumanian official who had requisitioned
the flat left everything nearly untouched.
Poldi could not exercise his profession as a lawyer, as there was no
big need for that, he taught Latin in medicine school
(the soviet universities had one semester for that purpose) and he and
Fritzi stayed in Cz.until their deaths. Another aunt who
came back from Transnistria found her flat nearly cleared out, but
still in good condition.
Others were not so lucky. If they came back after some soviet official
or even another deportee had been permitted to
have their apartment, they would have had to look for getting another
place to live. In 1944, due to the deportations to Transnistria,
and Rumanians having left the town, there was no problem. Later when
the stream of Russian families came in, people had to divide
housing with others. But there was never, in those years, the
crampiness of living like in Moskau.
