Czernowitzers...

It's the historian Prof. Dr. Mariana Hausleitner, who drew my attention to Gaelle Fisher's brand new book: Resettlers & Survivors • Bukovina and the Politics of Belonging in West Germany and Israel, 1945-1989. Read more at our Ehpes Blog

and get - like me - your personal copy now! Gaelle, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History in Munich, who holds a doctorate in history from University College London, is such an exceptionally gifted scientist. She writes vividly and casts significant new light on a previously neglected period of Bukovina's past.

It's not - only - because Gaelle is quoting the correspondence between my grandfather Elias Hauster and my father Julius Hauster in her book, but because she got it so right and sensitively:

"Elias Hauster, for example, was a retired a civil servant who had been born in 1878 in Austrian Czernowitz and survived the war in Cernauti. Having been repatriated from Northern Bukovina in 1946, he was living after the war as a refugee with his wife in the southern Bukovinian town of Radauti. The letters he wrote between 1946 and 1949 to his son Julius, who was then living in Bucharest, capture the extent of his hardship. Elias Hauster and his wife were housed in a small, cold basement apartment and could not afford food or medicine. When his pension was paid out after the war, it was one-fortieth of its previous value due to inflation, and the aid provided by the local Jewish community was insufficient to compensate for the difference. He repeatedly had to ask his son for money." [http://radautz.blogspot.com]

Congratulations on this outstanding book, dear Gaelle, and thank you for notification, dear Mariana!
