Another powerful idea for commemoration. I wonder how to compare the advantages and disadvantages of each . . .

Dear Edgar, dear all,

My suggestion would be Mykhailivka concentration camp - the place where Czernowitz poetress Selma Merbaum died from Typhus and Czernowitz painter Arnold Daghani survived. The camp was a Soviet collective farm before the war and served the same purpose again after the war was over. The buildings of the farm/camp are still there - now slowly crumbling away. https://goo.gl/maps/ZF6rhUFk1Tj6vbH17

I visited the site in 2016 with list member Sylvia de Swaan. There was no memorial at that time and I don't believe there is one today. Somewhere in the fields there must also be a mass grave. As far as I know it has not even identified so far and subsequently there is no marker. Mass grave markers are of course a sensitive topic. They help to commemorate but they also attract professionals who are looting such places. Nevertheless one may consider it as there are since some years experiences of how to commemorate and by the same time protect such places.

Since the vaccination campaign makes progress and the number of Corona infections is low at the moment I hope to return to Czernowitz for some days in early September.

Warm wishes,
Christian

Dear Czernowitzers,

It is very quiet in our group indeed. The Pandemic has to do a lot with this silence, as it has almost paralyzed our thoughts and feelings. This was not the time to think about memorials…
If it must be done now, let us all vote for a place. I do agree with Benjamin that the deportation left from somewhere, but not a station. I don’t know if it at all possible, but my choice would be the Temple, now Movie House.
The other choice would be the entrance to the Ghetto.

Let us all put our heads together en suggest places.

Stay well,

Ruth
