Hi David,

First of all, welcome to the group! Glad you found us. Some of us contributed to the development of the Geneasearch website.

So, if you have time and a free account on FamilySearch.org (the LDS Church website), you can view the Czernowitz-Jewish metrical books directly, using the info from Geneasearch to find each record of interest. After you login, start here:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1378569?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Marriage records might be the best place to start, with frequent references to parents and their home towns.

Good luck and please let us know of your findings.

Subject: [czernowitz-l] New Member Question
Hi everyone,

I am so happy I found this group and thank you for all the work you have done.

Here is my quest and question:
My maternal grandmother's family comes from neighboring Galicia, from
Rozniatow and Solotwina, specifically.
My Grandmother's Great Grandfather was Rabbi Israel Jacob Weinstein,
ABD/Chief Rabbi of Solotwina
His son, my Grandmother's Grandfather, was Rabbi Aharon Weinstein,
Head of the Beth Din Dayan (Jewish Court).
Some of you might know of Edward Gelles, a Jewish genealogical
historian and author of many books on his Jewish genealogy. His
website with many of his works is here:
http://archives.balliol.ox.ac.uk/Modern%20Papers/gelles/gelles.asp
Edward is also descended from Rabbi Israel Jacob Weinstein. He has
told me that the Weinstein family had a history in the region and that
there were related Weinsteins in Czernowitz and Odessa.
However, he has no primary documentation.
I found the Czernowitz Birth/Marriage/Death Records (over 276,000
records) database:
https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net/
And there are 253 records for Weinstein in the Index
My hypothesis is that since the records start in 1855 I might be lucky
and find some reference to a Weinstein from Solotwina, showing a
family connection. I can only hope.
However, I am starting from knowing nothing about whether any of these
Weinstein's are related to my Weinsteins.
Since the names in the index do not mean anything (yet), should I
order all 253 records in the hope of luckily finding in the text in
the record that a Weinstein that is related to my Solotwina family?
Would anyone with experience of this data set have any thoughts on how
to approach this when I am starting with so little information (eg
"there were Weinstein's in Czernowitz")
I have done brute force searches like this of hundreds of records and
been successful but it is a huge effort and so wanted to ask if anyone
had any thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance
