Hi Jan,
It’s fascinating to watch this story unfold. I took a particular interest since I have some Weissmann family connected to by Czernowitz/Bojan/Sadagora family. But these Weissmanns originated in Brody (Schloime and Zipre Weissmann, parents of Chaje Sure Weissmann born 1830 Brody). So I don’t yet find any name matches with those in Josef Weissmann’s family.
On MyHeritage, there are several family trees for Gerta Birnbaum. One gives a daughter’s name – Kristina – but she is deceased. Gerta was born in 1916 on these trees, and they show she’s the daughter of Chaim Birnbaum and Sara Weissmann. One tree gives a more extensive listing of Erna’s descendants marked “private”, but you need membership to contact the site owner. There are at least two other trees for this family, one controlled by Haim Rabinowitch, undoubtedly related to the Ben Rabinowitz you mentioned.
So I can’t quite get you in contact with living descendants in Israel, but hopefully someone with a full MyHeritage membership can contact these site owners to put you in touch.
Warmest wishes and best of luck!

Subject: [czernowitz-l] Link between the Weissmann and Birnbaum (and Schajowicz) family
Dear “Czernowitzers”,
A few months ago, I informed you that I am working on a book about the life of Josef Weissmann, who grew up in Czernowitz (1886 Bojan - 1943 Auschwitz). Thanks to diaries, letters and a family archive, much is known about his life from 1916 when he moved to Kassel in Germany. Unfortunately, little is known about his youth and family in Czernowitz. Edgar Hauster found in the newspaper archive (www.difmoe.eu/d<
http://www.difmoe.eu/d>) that Josef's father Osias Weissman committed suicide in 1931. An obituary also revealed that he was a committed Zionist and a committed member of the Jewish Reich Party.
In the meantime, I have discovered that Josef Weissmann has had at least two brothers (one unknown) and five sisters. Letters show that two of his sisters lived in America around 1920. It is unclear who they were. It has now become clear that his sister Sara Weissmann married Chaim (Chajem) Schmiel Birnbaum in Czernowitz in 1912. They had three children (Erna-1913, Greta-1914? And Arthur-1919). Erna married Janca (?) Simon Goldenberg in 1937 in Bucharest. It also became clear through MyHeritage that they survived the war and ended up in Israel with their family. The name of one the descendants is Ben Rabinowitz of whom I have no contact details. I am curious if this family knows more about the Weismann family and I would like to get in touch with them. Maybe someone from this group knows this family.
In the attachment you see the descendant chart of Osias Weissmann. If any of you know more about any of the names mentioned, please let me know.
Finally, I want to let you know that I am impressed with the vast amount of information that has been unlocked by all of you and the help that is being offered.
Greetings from Leiden in The Netherlands,
Jan Deelstra
