Dear Czernowitzers, I am among the "the silent readers" and have been so
for many years. I have enjoyed all the humor, thoughts and knowledge
which have been shared here on these pages. Now I wonder if you could
help me solving a mystery; My uncle Karl Ernst, born in Czernowitz in
1912, died in 1937, buried at Weissensee; Berlin, has this poem written
on his gravestone: Ach es ist so leicht zu schweben, auf dem strom der
uns umbraust. Doch es ist so schwer zu leben, wenn man mit sich selber
haust.
Karl committed sucide while being tortured by the police in Berlin. He
was political active. Does anyone of you recognize this text? I am not a
German speaker my language is Norwegians ,so I have not a clue to whom
might be the author. Can you help me? I wonder if it is linked to his
tragic death or his political views as a communist? I am anxious to hea
from you.
Regards
