Dear Iosif,
in the first draft of my mail I wanted to give two possible places: the Viktualienmarkt or the Exerzierplatz. But I eliminated the second possibility since first the hill up the Mühlsteg is quite steep and the shadow underneath the horses fall to the right (looking east would make no Sense). Beside I - nowadays (some years ago I was there and took dozen of photos before I was kicked out by a soldier) - can not find an angel of view from the barracks to see the town hall and the Jubiläumsschule and the cathedral without the prison? And there is another small clocktower beneath the town hall. If it would be the Exerzierplatz the only church I know would be the evangelische Kirche, but this would be left of the town hall. I read severeal times of a chapel, stood before Herz Jesu Kirche was errected, this might be this one? Maybe the only photo? Hm.
All the best, Benjamin

With the ongoing growth of the city, the market went further south and buildings were raised at this field. At the back of the photo you can clearly mark out the cupola of the dome on the right side, the building in the middle is the backside of the Landesverwaltung/-regierung (regional government) and the tower on the left has to be the tower of the town hall. The photo has therefor been taken before 1888, because of the missing third floor of the Landesverwaltung. _But_ I do not know, what those small building on the right might be, the bigger one might be the house at the corner to Spital Gasse…
