Czernowitzers...
I already drew your attention last November on the new publication of the book "Eine Atmosphäre von Hoffnung und Zuversicht" [An Atmosphere of Hope and Confidence] by Prof. Mariana Hausleitner. In the meantime, first-class book reviews have appeared in the prestigious German- and Romanian-language media, which I have reposted to our Ehpes blog:
http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=11061
No wonder that with such a positive response the first edition of the book is already out of stock, but the second edition will hopefully follow soon; lucky the one who - like me - has already procured his personal copy. When it comes to Fritz Schellhorn and his role in the rescue of nearly 20,000 Jews in Czernowitz, I refer to my post "Rescue Operation of the Czernowitz Jews - A Joint Venture?":
http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/2011/12/dr-dr-fritz-gebhard-schellhorn.html
Dr. Hartwig Cremers has also published a more in-depth article at Yad Vashem in 2018, which I would like to make available to interested parties via the following link:
http://hauster.de/data/YVS46-2EngCremers.pdf
Ultimately, we will not be able to quantify conclusively the shares of the individual protagonists in the rescue operations in favor of the Jews in Czernowitz, but what is more important is that these rescue operations nevertheless took place in the darkest of times.

Czernowitzers...
If I had published a post a few days ago under the heading "An Atmosphere of Hope and Confidence", I would have been accused of political influence. But that is only the title of the new book by the historian Prof. Dr. Mariana Hausleitner.
Now that the race for the White House is over, at least the vast majority of humanity sees it that way, we can turn back to the issues that really matter. In such turbulent times, it is a real consolation that new scientific and literary publications about Bukovina make life under lockdown conditions a little bit more worth living. Our GERMAN-SPEAKING readers will be pleased about the new releases:
http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=10990
1. Eine Atmosphäre von Hoffnung und Zuversicht [An Atmosphere of Hope and Confidence], a very important, long overdue and richly illustrated book. On the cover is Annie Andermann, who moved from Czernowitz to Bucharest in 1940 and did a lot for the orphans of Transnistria.
2. Gottes Mühlen in Berlin [Mills of God in Berlin], an inspiring literary and poetic journey of discovery after three quarters of a century.
3. Leben und Tod in der Epoche des Holocaust in der Ukraine [Life and Death in the Era of the Holocaust in Ukraine], a monumental work that comes late but can never be late.
4. Unser Überlebenswill war stark [Our Will To Survive Was Strong], moving interviews with Margit Bartfeld-Feller
5. Todefuge Gedichte und Prosa 1952-1967 [Deathfugue Poems and Prose 1952-1967], The Deathfugue, performed by Paul Celan himself, deeply touching and a lyrical delight at the same time. If you are interested in the other audio files, please feel free to contact me privately.
Yesterday in Paris my great-nephew of the 3rd degree, Isaack, was born. For him the Corona Pandemic, the US elections 2020 and - hopefully - Islamist terror will be history. He will be able to read about it in history books - or their electronic equivalent - and enjoy his life. I would be happy if he would also experience the richness of Bucovina's culture, which from time to time I’m sharing with you!
Stay healty & stay safe!
