Hello Alan

I also live in London so we can communicate easily.

I was born in Romania (nee Karin Hellmann) and have therefore also applied for Romanian citizenship– this was just before the lockdown and now everything has come to a halt due to Covid. I have been meaning to get back in touch with them to see what is happening with this application. I can read Romanian and speak it in a basic fashion, so can manage a little.

So – as I was Romanian at birth I therefore qualify. My daughter and granddaughters have also applied - as far as I know, you can have Romanian citizenship if your grandfather was Romanian.

Not sure you need lawyers but you definitely need someone who speaks/ writes Romanian and is familiar with the ins and outs. You will need to find (or have someone find) your grandfather’s birth certificate and probably also provide yours, and your fathers/ mothers (the direct descendant). All the non-Romanian documents have to be translated by a certified translator.

I need to find the name of someone I have once been put in touch with who was supposed to assist me – but I did not contact him – maybe he can assist you.
Will be back in touch once I’ve got to the bottom of this.

Kind regards
Karin

Friends

Forgive me if this has been discussed before but my brother and I are considering applying for Romanian citizenship because our late grandfather was born in Wiznitz/Vijnita/Vyzhnytsia in 1911

Have any of you gone down this path? I know of at least one other Czernowitzer who is.

Can any of you recommend a good Romanian lawyer who could help us.

I have already approached two Romanian lawyers - one says he does not take cases where the relatives come from outside current Romanian borders (ie present day Ukraine) and the other does not speak English so we are really struggling to understand the technicalities and I don't think Google Translate is helping very much

Any recommendations would be gratefully received

Alan
