Hello all

I did attempt the Austrian route. I live in London and went on the British website of the Austrian Embassy to find the link which gives you the long list of documents they require. Any documents that are not Austrian have to be apostilled in the country they originate from. In the UK the Foreign Office apostilles any UK documents. Documents may also need to be translated (by an official accredited translator) into German.

The list includes a demand for the address your parents/ grandparents lived at in Austria (or what constituted Austria) - I suppose with some proof - which is particularly difficult.

Any Romanian papers for instance need to be sent to Bucharest to be apostilled and that can be risky in terms of them getting lost and never reaching the right authorities or never getting back to you. (this is what the Romanian Embassy told me personally). As Czernowitz and Radauti were Romanian in 1939 you may well have many papers from Romania. It would of course be easier if you happened to have relevant papers dating back from the Austrian Monarchy.... and can prove parentage etc.

I personally think that your chances of success depend largely on the amount of your parent's documentation you still have. I know some members of this group have not had any difficulty but I believe their ancestry was easy to trace back with official papers.

The Austrian Embassy website in Israel where Shaul lives is the first port of call for him - the equivalent Embassy for Alisa will also have a website. I would not send any papers without first checking carefully you have everything on their list. I did find it very difficult.

I am by no means an expert but speak only from personal experience. I have decided to try the Romanian Passport route as I have found a friendly and welcoming reception at the Romanian Embassy here (I was born in Romania with grandparents from the Bukovina on both sides)

Good luck and kind regards
Karin

Good luck

Hi,

I am in a similar situation. My parents-Morgenstern moved from Cernowitz to Radautz in 1939 and then to Transnistria-Mogilev in 1941. I was borne in 1945 in Radautz after their return from the 4 years "holidays". As from 1970 I am leaving in Israel.
I would appreciate receiving the same information as required by Alisa.

Many thanks in advance

Kind Regards,

Shaul Morgenstern

Hi,
I would like to obtain Austrian citizenship as a descendent of parents from Radauti Bukovina , who were deported to Transnistria, Moghilev.
I was wondering if anyone who went through this process could advise about the documents I need and if I have to go through a lawyer which would be very expensive, or could I forward the documents I’ll need, directly to the embassy.
Thank you so much,
Alisa Lottati
