Subject: [czernowitz-l] Zolotyi Potik (Potok Zloty) Jewish cemetery
Hello all-
I hope this email finds all are doing well.
I am writing to mention a “project” I am doing to preserve and identify matzevot in the cemetery in this small town in Galicia-where my father was born.
There is a large Jewish cemetery that has gravestones from mid-1700’s until early 1900’s, estimated to be about 150 “intact” gravestones. It is located in this town which is close to Buchach. The gravestones have been photographed many years ago, placed on the internet, but sadly, are not clear to identify. They require careful cleaning, for sure.
Additionally, many of the matzevot had been removed-either by the Nazis or the Russians- and had been placed as stairs in an old castle in town. They have recently been removed from the castle by the townspeople while they were renovating the site. However, they are “broken”, but were placed within the Jewish cemetery. They, too, need to be moved to another place within the cemetery grounds and identified.
I have videos of the site that were recently taken by a researcher who visited the site a few months ago. I can make them available to any of you for your interest.
I am interested in proceeding with the careful cleaning, identification and maintenance of this cemetery.
