horrified and helpless - but in my heart full of compassion for the people of Ukraine. We are left with words of solidarity.
Let me express it in Selma Merbaum's words, the young jewish poet from Czernowitz. She wrote the poem in the so-called 'Russian Year', after it had become clear to everyone that the invasion was not the promissed liberation. Selma was 17 years old then.
"Du, weißt du, wie der Wind schrill heult,
und wie der Wald, erschrocken bleich,
nicht weiß wohin zu fliehen?
Wie er verängstigt nicht mehr weiß:
Ist es sein Reich, ist es nicht sein Reich,
gehört er dem Regen oder der Nacht,
und ist der Tod, der schauerlich lacht, nicht sein allerhöchster Herr?"
"Do you know how the wind howls shrilly and how the forest, frightened and pale, does not know where to flee? How, frightened, it no longer knows: is it its kingdom, is it not its kingdom, does it belong to the rain or to the night, and is death, laughing eerily, not its almighty lord?"
