Dear List Members,

After my email earlier today, I received the below response from Dr. Raul Mittelmark, who was born during the War, in Bershad, Transnistria. With his permission, I’m sharing his story with you (below) along with a brief biography that he developed. He’s also working on his memoirs, which I am sure will be an important contribution.

His story is essential to tell, and to that end, he continues to lecture on his first-had knowledge of the holocaust.

With very best wishes,
Bruce

Dear Bruce,

Thank you so much for your contributions and efforts on behalf of the Czernowitz Jewish community!
Just an FYI, my parents were deported from Czernowitz to Bershad Transnistria in October of 1942.
I was born in hiding a few months later in Bershad and survived....
My grandparents, on my mother side were from Hotin, perished on a death march to Transnistria.
Grandfather Israel Ghitzis,a pharmacist , was also the respected mayor of Hotin
My parents returned to Czernowitz after the war.
My mother (Roza Ghitzis) was rehired by the Music Conservatory
My father Herman(Hans) Mittelmark, as a civic engineer with expertise in bridge building was recruited
by the Red Army. His parents and family lived in Wiena and later in Storojinetz, perished before the war.
When USSR started deporting jews to Siberia, my parents run into Rumania, later USA and Israel.
I am currently retired and live in California.
I regularly lecture about the Holocaust and Transnistria at the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum and Simon Wiesenthal Museum...some of my talks could be found online.
I know Ruth Gold very well and admire her book and activities.
Again, many thanks for all you do.

Raul

Dear Friends,

This just showed up in my newsfeed this morning:

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-europe-germany-the-holocaust-bucharest-d9ea18c37e2daa9d60f0eb558b146981<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-europe-germany-the-holocaust-bucharest-d9ea18c37e2daa9d60f0eb558b146981__;!!K543PA!bzaEg1e0fneJeGj6UBwp2qKLXqiCfRa0FKs0DSt13uZLLuPHnHcYq2xKvD4FiXOy$>

I’m glad to see the increasing awareness of the role of Romania and Transnistria in the Holocaust. Of course our own Ruth Glasberg Gold and Felicia Carmelly-Steigman were among the first to raise awareness of the horrors of Transnistria. With too much denial of the holocaust taking place, it’s important that these efforts continue.

I don’t know exactly where the family in “So They Remember” came from, but from the photos associated with the above article, they lived in Chernivtsi for a period of time after the War.

Warmest wishes,

Bruce
