Send EmailSend Email Hello Everybody, We have been to 2 professional travel agents, talked to Aerosvit on the phone and have managed to gather the following information we consider important: As for now, There isn't a TLV-Kiev flight of Aerosvit on May the 18th, and therefore those of us who wish to continue to Cz by plane from Kiev have to reach Kiev on the day before, the 17th, with an El-Al flight. The price of the El-Al flight including taxes is 528$. The Kiev-Cz flight if bought separately, is 307$ (both ways, of course). The plane used for the inland flight is Antonov4 which hosts 120 passengers. There is only one flight a day to Cz, and from Kiev only. However, in a month's time, Aerosvit are about to present their summer schedule. They plan to add many more flights from Tlv to Kiev - the flights will be available almost daily. Taking a flight from Tlv - Kiev - Cz with Aerosvit costs all together around 550$, which makes it much moew reasonable. My father and I have decided to book seats on the Kiev-Cz flights, and to wait till next month in order to see if there is an Aeroswit flight from Tlv to Kiev on that day. One must however remember, that the flight to Kiev ends at the Borispol airport, and the flight from Kiev to Cz takes off from the Zoulani airport. The flight back, from Cz to Kiev is better organised because it lands at the Borispol international airport directly (terminal A). The price of the Austrian flights TLV-VIE-Lvov costs 644$ including taxes. By the way, travel agenst sitting next to ours at the same agency immigrated to Israel a few years ago from Lvov. She claims that the condition of the roads is horrible, and she personally recommends flying to Kiev and taking a night's train to Cz from there. We believe all options are feasible; we prefer however not to order anything yet and to wait until Aeroswit publish their new summer schedule and prices. The option of taking a train from Kiev or Lvov to Cz is always there. This is to answer Mimis request about my experience of "practical matters" on my visits to Chernivtsi. I was posted in Kiev from June 1996 to June 1999, but didnt find the time till my last weeks there to pay a visit to the place I was born, and which I left in 1945 at the age of four. In 1999 there was no flight from Kiev to Chernivtsi, so I went by train when the opportunity finally arised. I was totally unpreprared: all I knew was the new name of the Morariugasse where my mothers family lived at number 8b. But I didnt know that the numbers had also changed, because that street has been coupled with another one and I couldnt find 8b. I went again to Czernowitz in September 2003 (after reading Flo Heymann's book) and in April/May 2004. Both times I took a local guide who was acquainted with the chief archivist Maria pity that she retired: she was very helpful, both in 2003 and 2004, and spoke very well German; the other Maria (who replaced her) speaks French and can be of help if she smells an interest at no risk. I found all possible information at the Central archives, but it should be clear to all of you that those archives are an exception in Bukowina: you will not find any interesting document in the smaller towns, probably because they have been taken and possibly destroyed by the Rumanians, either in 1918-20, after WWI, or during WWII but I explained this already in one of my previous mails, if you read it. I found the correct house of my family on the second trip. By the way, I now have a list (almost complete) of street names, with their correspondance during the Rumanian period as well as the Soviet and Ukrainian times. But I presume that you already have it on the List-site. Anyway, I will bring it along when I come, so that the newcomers can photocopy it. At the cemetery I found that director, Yuri P. (I understand from Mimis mail, reacting to mine and Bruce's ones, that he has been fired since). He spoke French and was also acquainted with my guide, which made things easier for me. And, as I already mentioned in a previous mail, the registers available at the cemeterys office go as far back as 1906. On my first trip I stayed at the Cheremosh horrible at that time. Later, I stayed at a private place an apartment owned by Knaus (a German from Khazakstan who established there shortly before Ukrainian independence and organized a transport and tourism company), and I could pay there in Hryvnia at an interesting rate that is not the case at the hotel. What else? Yes, I could use my French mobile in 2003 and 2004. So, you see, there is no real additional practical matter in my experience of Chernivtsi that can be of help to the group I mean additional to what I or another group member have already mentionned in previous mails. Starting from tomorrow, I will be away for a week or ten days. Upon my return, I should be able to definitively tell you that I will come in May I sure hope so. One last word for Hardy: I like your memories and the way you tell them, and I like your (decent) humour! Many thanks for it. Regards to all, Charles ---------------------------------------------- mirtaylo@... wrote: Dear Charles, Thank you for the information. I did not remember that you had been to Chernivtsi. In the course of arranging shtetl tours (for members who subscribed months ago) I was given the names of three guides who lead tours of Cz (and/or what I refer to as "suburbs). I have very little information about any of them. All three were recommended by someone living in Cz who is supposedly knowledgeable. I did not use any of them for the tours I arranged primarily because they were not fluent in English or were not interested in leading trips much beyond the city. If any of you are interested and can work with the languages they speak, feel free to contact them and make your own private arrangements. You might want to tell them you got to them via the Cz Reunion as I have spoken to or e mailed all of them previously about our plans and they are interested in the work. 1. Ljudmila Mechtsherjakowa. She works at the National University of Czernowitz. Cell number 80506907050 She does tours in German, Russian and Ukrainian and charges 10 EU/ hour. 2. Slavik Teutuliak. His cell number (+ 380 509393938). This is the only means of reaching him. He speaks German, Romanian and claims to speak English although the one time we spoke, I was not impressed. 3. Oksana Nakonechna The best way to reach her is via her cell phone +380-50-1920848. She speaks German, Russian and broken English. She tells me she charges EU 100/day to take a group of 10 people for a day tour of Cz. I suspect this would be her charge regardless of the size of the group but don't know this for sure. Another person you might want to consider is Zoya Danilovitch. She works for the Chernomosh Hotel, is fluent in English, is very experienced and is well known to Mimi and others in the group. In fact, she will be the guide for the overall Reunion group when we tour Cz on Friday morning, May 19th and will also go with us to the cemetery on Sunday May 21st. If any of you would like to make private arrangements with her for tours at other times, e mail her at VERY IMPORTANT - the subject line of your e mail should read "For Zoya Danilovitch" Finally, if there are any of you who are interested in going with the group of 18 members to Transnistria (on May 23rd and staying overnight, probably in Mogilev), we have room on the bus for about 10 additional people. If you are interested in this option, please let me know very soon because the guide leading this trip will have to find hotel space for you and arrangements like this take much longer in Ukraine than most of us are accustomed to. Just in case some of you might be wondering, I have arranged for a bus with toilet! Dear Mr Rindner, there are flights to Lviv also from Warsaw (daily) and from, Frankfurt (2 times a week). Apart from that you can fly into Suczawa via Bucharest daily and hire a car from there to Czernowitz. There is also a day train from Bucharest to Czernowitz. There are also daily flights from Kiev to Czernowitz with Antonov-planes. However, those flights are not very relyable, if there is bad weather they can be delayed. So if you are opting for this possibility, make sure to spend a night an Kiew on your way home. All in all I recommend the route via Lemberg. That is why I decided to go in a way that my guide could accompany me over the border. I was met in eastern Hungry by my driver, and we had no trouble crossing. In the time since those stories were told to me, i believe things have changed. When I return, I will not be concerned. The only question is, for those who cross by train, is whether they still have to change the train because of the tracks. I was told this took some time. Send EmailSend Email Dear Czernowitzers: I have been waiting for information from the guides in Cz in order to update you about the planned shtetl trips but it has been slow coming and unfortunately, I still don’t have it all. I wanted to give you a firm price for each trip and arrange for payment in advance, but this is not going to be possible. The reason is the guides cannot get the drivers to quote them a firm price due to the fluctuating cost of gasoline. In fact, they will only know this very close to the time of our arrival. I have arranged for a bus with toilet for the Transnistria trip but am still waiting for hotel information for the overnight stay In the meantime, I have made firm commitments to each guide and asked for a large enough vehicle for the number of members who subscribed to each trip. I am therefore expecting each of you to honor the reservation you made and pay the cost of any trip(s) you confirmed even if you change your mind between now and when they take place. When we get to Cz, I will ask each of you for payment in US dollars - which is how I have to pay the guides/drivers. Since I will still have many last minute details to look after, I would appreciate it if you would find me rather than make me have to search for you. Below is a list of trips, each with it’s own identifying code. This is how we will identify the vehicles at the hotel in Cz so you will know which is the right one for your trip. The itinerary follows (although not necessarily in order) and names of those holding reservations.
