The similarity between "Shamenet" and "Shmetana" or "Smetana" is too
great to be a coincidence.
The Hebrew "Shamenet" comes from "shamen" which means "fat" and is an
old word,
also found in the Bible, both in the story of Joseph and in the book
of "Prophets".
I therefore assume that "Smetana" comes from the Hebrew or the Yiddish.
The Austrian empire had within its borders more Slavic than Germanic
people,
so that it would not be astonishing if the Austrian "Schmetten" came
from "Smetana".
I am not familiar, nor could find in any dictionary the words
"Schmand" or "Schmant",
which leads me to believe that it is an archaic word.
