Hello Margo!

First of all, greetings to a fellow Cornellian. Glad to hear your story; my
Reisch family also originated in Sadagora.

There are a number of potential resources for you to check, including the
Anno Newspaper archive just mentioned by Edgar in his post earlier today.
They DO go back to the period before your family left Czernowitz. For direct
access to vital records, check the indices available online at
https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net . There is a pretty complete index
found here to Czernowitz records from the mid 1800s to 1930s, and there are
many listings for Morgensterns. Some Sadagora records are included here as
well, but the records that are known to exist for Sadagora are very limited.

If you find vital records of interest, click on 'additional details' and you
can look them up directly on the Czernowitz Jewish records found online at

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1378569?availability=Family%20Hi
story%20Library

(To search images, you must login and have an account on the system; no fee
involved.)

For Sadagora records, they can be browsed here (no index):

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1378647?availability=Family%20Hi

Good luck!

Subject: [czernowitz-l] Searching for Morgenstern or Ritberg families

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking on this list for several years, and enjoying the posts.
This list is a wonderful resource!

Now I am wondering if anyone can help me find more information on my family
members who left Czernowtiz in the 1890s. Are there any good records that
far back?

Here is what I know:

My great-great-grandfather Israel Morgenstern was born in Sadagora (about 4
miles from Czernowtiz) in 1851. He owned a whiskey distillery (in
Czernowitz, I think, but perhaps in Sadagora). I've heard that it burned
down in the late 1880s - and was the impetus for them to move to the U.S.

His wife, my great-great-grandmother was Chaia Ridberg (or Rotberg,
Rittberg, or Rittenberg). She was born in Toprowitz, also near Czernowitz.

Their 7 children were born there - and they lived in either Sadagora or
Czernowitz.

They left for the U.S. in 1890, and them emigrated to Jerusalem, Palestine
in 1898, where they opened a tea & coffee shop in the Jewish Quarter of the
Old City.

Israel and Chaia are supposedly buried on the Mount of Olives in Israel.

I would love to find out more about their life in (or near) Czernowitz,
including about their business.

I would also love to learn whether they are in fact buried on the Mount of
Olives.

I would also love find a way to track down the descendants of their
daughters in Israel. One of their daughters, my great-grandmother (Rose
Morgenstern) returned to the U.S. in 1906, and we have lost touch with all
the family members who remained in Israel.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Margo Hittleman
