John, Larry, Jerome, et al,
I am one of the people who suggested to Bruce that the default reply-to be
changed, i.e. to remove the default reply-to going to the group.
There are a couple of reasons for this.
(1) a subset of all replies are meant to be private and not posted to the group
(2) to be consistent with the various listserv groups of JewishGen.org of which
this is somewhat related. They do not default to reply back to the group.
(2a) Moveover the moderators of those groups many times insert a line that all
replies to a given post should be private when someone is asking about their own
specific family research or similar.
The fact that each message no longer defaults to the group doesn't mean you
can't send your reply to the group if that is what you really want. I am
replyiing to the group and to the latest poster of this thread by clicking on
"Reply All" in Netscape messenger which is the e-mail reader that I use.
Clicking on "Reply" would only go privately.
However, I also have the group in my address book so that merely typing cz in
the To: or Cc: fields addresses it to the group.
Of course we all use different mail readers and have different level of skills
but that will always be true.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. <Grin>
