<x-flowed>Czernowitzers (and Sadagorans):
Several of you have requested a return to the default
"reply-to-list". I've responded to most of you on this question
privately. Though I urge you all to limit posting to the topic of
the History and Genealogy of the Jewish Communities of Czernowitz and
Sadagora, since the interest in the issue may be more widespread than
the 5-6 subscribers who have posted on it, I'll violate my own
suggestion and give you an explanation here.
We had two problems:
1. Some people couldn't view the email address of the sender in the
header. Therefore they had no option but to reply to the list in
order to send a private reply to the sender.
2. Some people weren't checking where their messages were going, and
thus sent to the list private replies that were clearly not meant for
the list. In my opinion, supported by others on the group, we
clearly had a number of postings that would have been best sent
directly to an individual rather than the list at large.
Anyone replying to a message still has the option to delete the
recipient's address and re-address the mail to Czernowitz-L if they
would like it to go to the group. I hope you understand.
I am going to stand by my decision, leave the default settings where
they are currently, and hope that we can return now to the topic for
which this list was created. I thank each of you for your feedback,
and I apologize that this decision will not satisfy everybody.
Please remember that we do this as volunteers, and the Cornell
hosting is free. Some have suggested that the list should be on
JewishGen. We were discouraged from doing so by JewishGen
management, as their hosting of other town discussion groups has been
a source of problems. We then looked at other hosting services on
the web but each option had some significant negatives. At least our
hosting on Cornell's service is free, fast, reliable, and not loaded
with advertising. If you have more to say regarding the management of
the list, I would appreciate it if you would email myself and Carl
Ulrich (culrich_at_yellowhead.com) privately.
Finally - if you have some email friends interested in Jewish
Czernowitz and Sadagora, please encourage them to join us.
