Dear Lucca,

Sure hope that professor didn't get tenure. Any philologist with
knowledge of dialectology, especially a "Germanistik" specialist, should
have known about the geographical spread of German and the phonetic
characteristics of German dialects in greater Europe. In grad school in
linguistics we studied just these characteristics and distributions. So you
probably met a so-so prof.

Thanks for an interesting and nostalgic vignette about Heidelberg.

Regards,

Martha Birnbaum
