Dear CZERNOWITZ Group,
I placed a pre-Purim call to an older aunt and uncle just now. They
moved to the U.S. from CZERNOWITZ in 1992. My uncle said that the last
official burial in the Jewish Cemetery took place in approximately 1984,
perhaps earlier. Since then, there have been other burials, but only if
a family spot was reserved such as a wife's spot next to a husband's.
The cemetery is pretty much full at this point. From this call, I
learned for the first time that my great-aunts are buried in the mixed
cemetery in CZERNOWITZ.
Furthermore, my uncle recounted that during the Soviet era, a law was
passed pertaining to Jewish cemeteries. This law stated that if a
tombstone was in place for 50 years, it could be removed and another
burial could be made in the same spot. My uncle's mother's grave in
Mogoliev-Podolsk was removed for this reason.
Shevua Tov and Feilichen Purim!
Thanks,
Vlad
