<x-charset windows-1255>Talking yesterday of the hotel "Schwarzer Adler", it suddenly brought back a
buried childhood memory. You must understand that elevators did not belong
to the usual equipment of houses in the mid-thirties, simply because there
were few houses who needed them, they were not that high. I do remember
some private buildings who had evevators, but for some reason, those
elevators never moved, they were grounded and people walked up the two or
three flights of stairs.

The elevator in the Schwarzen Adler did move and quite well. I had two older
male cousins who were always up to mischief and I was completely exhilareted
when they included me in their adventures. One day they decided to ride the
hotel elevator and not quite willingly they took me along. I must have been
about 5 years old. They were around 10 or 11. We entered the elevator in the
hotel and they put it into action, however they did not know how to stop it,
so it went up and down and up and down while people who were waiting for it
got quite upset. At a certain point, I don't remember how, they managed to
escape, while I remained inside. They left me to face the music.
The elevator finally stopped, or someone made it stop, and I walked out
scared like the dickens. People looked at me and I heard one lady:
"Whaat? This little thing caused all this commotion? Where are her parents?
She should be spanked all right!"

Dreams and memories of Czernowitz...they come and go, often welcome, at
other times less so!
