<x-flowed>Dear Czernowitzers:
Several have inquired recently about the status of the JGS Ottawa-led
project to post burial register information and tombstone images from
the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery on the JewishGen web site. As most of
you know, all the tombstones were photographed and burial registers
were copied prior to 2002. In 2003/04, all the records in the burial
registers were entered into computer files by (tireless and
dedicated!) volunteers. These records still have to be verified,
double-checked, before submission to JewishGen for internet posting.
Meanwhile, I would be very glad to do individual name lookups for
anyone in the group. Write directly to me at
<bir1_at_nysaes.cornell.edu>.
The next phase of the project will involve the transcription of name
and date of death information from the tombstones into Excel
spreadsheets. Background work is being done on this now, but the
actual transcription of information has not yet started. I do have a
team of multilingual volunteers/translators ready to go just as soon
as I receive the images to distribute to them, along with a template
and instructions.
Thanks for your patience - doing a good job on this database will
take some time.
Best always,
Bruce
