<x-flowed>Dear Czernowitzers!
I found the following post on the JewishGen discussion group this morning:

Subject: online 1924 Romanian directory

Dear friends,
I don't know if this information was posted previously, but there is a 1924
Romanian directory online (Library of Congress website); it also includes
Bessarabia and other regions that were part of pre-war Romania. The finding
aid is very helpful. Note that the towns are in Romanian spelling (example:
Vizhnitsa is spelled "Vijnita"):

If you go to this site, you'll find quite a complete directory of
Romania, including all of Bukovina, from approx. 1924. You'll need
to translate some Rumanian to understand the listings (see last web
site listed below). They are NOT organized by surname; you'll find
listings for individuals under their respective occupations or
professions. Unfortunately, I find no street addresses for
individuals in small towns, but street addresses are given for
Czernowitz! I was amazed how quickly I could locate listings for
some of my family under business and profession categories. The
business advertisements also include many surnames that I've seen
mentioned on our list.
Volume I covers Bucharest, but Volume II is what you'll want to see.
The "finding aid" to help you understand Volume II contents, which
include Bukovina, is here:
http://www.loc.gov/rr/european/phonero/rmdir2help.html
Listings for Cernauti begin with image 854. Sadagura listings are
found within the section for Cernauti, starting with image 893. You
can get to any image from here:
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=gdc3&fileName=scd0001_20030122001ropage.db
(make sure all of this appears on one line in your web browser)
Additional indexing for urban and rural communities is found at
images 2190-2193. But note that the page numbers given do not come
even close to corresponding to the image numbers for the online
directory. Use the "finding aid" page to navigate to appropriate
sections.
Each page is available as a "High Quality Image" by clicking that
phrase at the top of the page.
If you are as challenged by the Romanian language as I am, an
excellent aid to translations for occupations and professions is on
JewishGen at:

May all your searches be successful!
