Dear List Members:
I am writing today to announce the formation of a subgroup that will consider
ways to raise money for an estimate for restoration and maintenance of the
Jewish cemetery in Czernowitz.
By way of a short history, I offer the following: Some time ago, one of our
members attempted to raise money for an estimate of the costs involved in
restoring the cemetery. The estimate was to be done by HFPJC (Heritage Foundation
for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries). Unfortunately, sufficient funds were
not raised.
In July of this year a letter was received from a member of the Czernowitz
City Council by the name of Volodymyr Kylynych, which, among other things asked
for suggestions on how the city could celebrate the Jewish heritage of
Czernowitz as part of the 600th anniversary of the city.
In October, our group sent a letter in reply. It indicated that there were
three major sites that we were concerned about. First was the cemetery, then
the synagogue, and third, creation of a museum or exhibit that would tell the
history of Jewish Czernowitz. Both of these letters can be viewed on our website.
Since I have been lucky enough to have been to the cemetery, and stood at the
graves of my ancestors there, I have felt that restoration of the cemetery
should be a high priority of the group. What greater tribute to our ancestors,
than to restore and preserve the cemetery in which they lie?
After discussions with a number of individuals in the group, I have decided
to form a subgroup to explore ways in which we may raise funds to have the
aforementioned estimate completed. Whether by HFPJC or another organization, I
believe an estimate is the logical first step.
The dual purpose of this estimate would be to give it to the City Council
should they ask, and should they not ask, to use for future attempts by the
group to raise the funds.
I have some ideas of my own, on how to go about this, but I am anxious for
additional input.
If you would like to be involved in this effort, please contact me.
Thank you
