I share Bruce Wexler's desire to have the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery
restored and maintained.
Having visited the cemetery 3 times since the summer of 2006,
I am well aware of the deplorable state it is in.
But in my opinion, expecting the city of Chernivtsi to spend any money
on restoring or maintaining the Jewish cemetery, just is not realistic.
The old Christian cemetery across the street from the Jewish one,
is in the same deplorable condition.
One of the sessions in the upcoming Czernowitz and Bukowina Reunion,
will be devoted to presenting all known facts relating to the cemetery,
discussing the possible actions we can take to have the cemetery restored
and maintained and finally agreeing on a united and concerted action plan.
This will then be a plan backed not only by the Cz.-List, but by the
World Organization of Bukovina Jews.
I would like to ask that anyone interested in participating in the effort
to restore the cemetery volunteer to do research on one of the following
topics:
1. The legal status of the cemetery.
2. Case histories of the renovation of cemeteries in other parts of Eastern
Europe
3. Generally approved mechanisms of cemetery maintenance and preservation.
Including; Herbicides approved for use in the US and Europe, the legality
of using them in the Ukraine.
4. Existing organizations which may provide us with expertise and or money.
With best wishes for a happy Chanukah,
Mimi
