I think very many of us ate ham (Schinken), but not at home, as long as the
older generation ( our grandparents) was alive. Not only did we eat it, but
in 1944 when the Russians returned and nobody could live on the salary they
earned, my father and some of our friends, made boiled ham to be sold on the
black market, as a cottage industry. (I know of 3 people who made the ham,
clearly there had to be far more who bought and ate it.

This is an answer to only one of very many questions which are part of
"What was Czernowitz really like?"
