Dear Melita, Dear Czernowitzers,
>From what I remember about the sum of money the HFPJC wanted us to raise,
just to survey and estimate the cost of renovating the Czernowitz Jewish
cemetery, they were very expensive. Large organizations, often have large
overheads and are not particularly frugal in spending the funds they
collect.
It is possible that there are not enough Czernowitzers willing to give of
their time, effort and money, in order to do this on our own. But it is
worth a try. I suggest that in the meantime we do not collect any money.
Those interested, do the necessary research and inform the rest of us. Once
we find that there are at least 10 of us who are willing to work on this
project and that we agree on the manner and method of setting-up of an
organization and fund for the cleanup and maintenance of the cemetery, we
establish the organization and proceed with the work, including the
collection of money.
The World Org. of Bukowina Jews in Israel expected to collaborate with the
city authorities of Chernivtsi, once they realized that the city authorities
were not reliable, they gave up.
Let us try to do this on our own, if it does not work, we can always give up
later.
