Greetings Czernowitzers!

I'm finally getting out from most (not all) of the backlog as regards
the website, which for the newcomers on the list lives at:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com

1. The Czernowitz FamilyFinder has been updated as of yesterday 7
January. If you sent me material for the 'finder' in the past month or
so, it should be there now (except for the stuff that arrived today), so
check it out for mistakes and let me know if any changes need to be
made. If it isn't there and should be, let me know.

Usually, if someone makes a query wanting info about surnames in our
area of coverage I email them asking if they want those surnames listed
in our finder. This is gets time consuming and hard to follow up, so I'm
thinking of just adding them from the email request to the group without
specific permission. So when making such a query, if you don't want it
listed, just add 'Do not list' somewhere in your message. Or if you find
it on the site and you don't want it there, just email me and I'll
remove it. I think we must be getting close to 375 surnames now.

A listing contains the surname of interest + perhaps alternate
spellings; the location of interest; the submitter's full name; and a
working email address for the submitter. Listing is a good thing; and
don't forget to list on JewishGen's Family Finder as well!

2. The Notable Czernowitzers section has been updated and at last,
is alphabetized by surname. If you submitted material for this section,
take a look and see that it's correct. I did a bunch of re-typing here,
so there are bound to be errors.

3. The Archives have been updated to year end 2005.

4. Two new additions to the 'Help/Find/Translate' section: Cornel
Fleming is seeking help in translating two postcard address sides which
are written in Russian, and a back of one card written presumably in
Yiddish. And Jane Reifer is looking for info on Benjamin Aprile or the
benevolent society that bears his name. Can you help these folks? Check
it out in the 'Help Identify/Find section of the website.

5. Statistics... in December we had more than 850 visits to the site;
we served up almost a gigabyte of data from about 19,000 requests
(hits). A Google search on Czernowitz mentions our website on its 3rd,
12th and 45th entries (maybe more). Google has started indexing pages
besides our home page (the Reunion page for example). The easier folks
can find us from the net at large, the more people that join Cz-L, and
the richer our genealogical resources become. We've actually done quite
well: from page 27 to page two since we moved to 'ehpes.com. in August
2005. Can you help? Yes you can: make http://czernowitz.ehpes.com your
home page. Then every time you turn on your computer and bring up your
browser, we get a hit. The search engines of Yahoo, Google, MSN,
AskJeeves, etc. count these hits (among other things) in figuring out
which sites to promote to the front for a given search term like
'Czernowitz'. Just a thought <g>.

Finally, I'm working with Cornel Fleming to put together a presentation
of over 50 family photos -- this stuff is fascinating (at least to me)
as so many of these photos are 'classic'; that is it could be your
family or mine. Also just about ready to present Helmut Kusdat's photos
of his restoration project for the 'Leichenhalle' at the Czernowitz
cemetery. I'm hoping of course that his effort re-invigorates our own as
regards the cemetery.

More soon...
Best,
jerome
