My late mother spoke of the rich land-owners, who I always understood
were not the Jews. They may have managed the timber businesses for local
or absentee land-owners, but I am not sure about that. She always spoke
of the English governesses who were employed by these wealthy
land-owners and whom she befriended, because this is how she learned
English as a young girl.
I had the impression that the Jews were their employees or simply
living in the area as business people and professionals catering to the
timber industry and local population. They seemed to have had a rich
social life though,- great balls and parties with lots of fun for the
young people, but with great class-distinction!
Timber must have been a lucrative industry and therefore forested
Bucovina was a prosperous area with plenty of money about,- but not for
everybody. It must have attracted the Jews from other areas to settle
there.
I have put on my blog , below, the eye-witness acount from
JewishGen.Yizkor book, of what happened to my mother's stetl, Ciudin
near Storozinetz, where my grandfather and aunt were butchered in one
day in '41.
