Hi Nina,
I currently maintain a list of surnames for the members of the Kolomea
research group and have gotten quite interested in the topic. Kaiser Joseph
II
mandated that all Jews in the Austro-Hungarian Empire take on hereditary
surnames with the exception for the time being of Hungary. They came from many
sources including names that were assigned by the clerks responsible for
registering names in a given district. These names came from a short
list and the clerks were given a very short time to complete the
job. Other authors said
  that
sometimes the name you received depended upon how much you paid the clerk.
Here is a list of name origins:

P Patronyms-names based upon those of the father such as Aronson
(son of Aaron).
G Local Place Names-names based upon the name of a local city, town
or place such as Rottenberg (a city in Germany)
O Vocational-names based upon a person's vocation such as Schneider
(tailor)
H Family Symbols and/or Signs-names based upon a family symbol or a
sign that hung at or by the home such as Rothschild (red shield)
F Animal Names-names derived from animals such as Lowe, Loeb (from
Judah the Lion which became Judah Lowe or Loeb)
D Names Describing Personal Characteristics such as Klein(small),
Gross(large), Weiss(white).
M Names Derived From Feminine Names or Words such as Rosen, which is
derived from Rose
L Names from Acronyms or Denoting a Lineage-Often from
Hebrew such as Bruck (Ben Rabbi Akiba); Levy (Priests)
C Names that Indicate Son-In-Law Of
F Fanciful Names That Were Assigned or Imaginatively Invented
JO Jewish Ornamental Names Often From Natural Phenomenon
U Jewish Origin is Unknown

As you can see, it is fairly complex. Later today, I'll look up the names
you listed in my library and send you the information.
