Dear Czernowitzers,
I would like once more to raise the problem of the restoration and
maintenance of the Jewish cemetery. This problem has been discussed
in the past without any resolution being reached. I have sent the
participants of the "Czernowitz Reunion 2006" a suggestion as to how
I think this problem should be handled, but would now like to bring it
to the attention of all of you. Sorry that many will now get this
suggestion in slightly altered form twice.
This is what I think needs to be done:
1. Gather factual information about large plants eradication in
cemeteries. Apparently when trees and large bushes are removed,
the ground might sink and stones and graves with it.
Herbicides might be acidic and damage the stones or the human remains.
They may also pollute the ground-water.
2. Make a cost estimate of restoring the cemetery and maintaining it.
3. Do research into the opportunities of public and private funding for such
a project.
4. Do research into the possibility of pressure being put to bear on the
mayor and city council of Chernivtsi by those with influence and power.
5. Elect a committee to handle the whole project.
This is just a suggestion, I am neither an expert on cemetery restoration
nor on public relations. Anyone interested in the subject, please send in
your ideas. There may be an opportunity for a committee or delegation to
meet with the mayor of Chernivtsi during the Cz. Reunion and it would be
advisable that such a committee or delegation be well informed and have the
consent of the Cz.-L and the Organization of Bukovina Jews for anything it
does.
Best regards,
Mimi
