Dear Ms. Friedman,
I believe I can shed some light on Willawcze. This is a village in the
historic province of Bukowina , now in the Chernivtzi Oblast (region) of
Ukraine, district of Vashkivtzi.
Correct name(s): Under Austrian rule (1775-1918) it was Willawcze
(pronounced Vilaf'che), during Romanian rule (1918-1940 and 1941-1944)
it was Vilaucea (pron. Vilau'cha) and under Soviet/Ukrainian rule
(1940-1941 and since 1944) it has been Vilavche (phonetic
transcription).
Location: About 15 miles SW of Vashkivtzi and 40 miles W of Chernivtzi
(Czernowitz).
Population: The Jewish population in 1880 was 468 or 15 % of the total.
There was a massacre of Jews there on July 5, 1941, the surviving Jews
were all deported to Transnistria where few survived. There are no Jews
living there today.
I hope this will help you in your search.
Regards,
Alfred Schneider
