Can anyone explain, or does anyone know, why a Czernowitzer born at that
time would have spoken Romanian as his mother tongue? It was my impression
that we only spoke Romanian when we absolutely had to.

*** Between 1918 and 1940 (more or less) Czernowitz was in Romania. My
father was born in 1908, he started his school in German but after 1918 he
had to learn Romanian to finish school. Teachers and professors as well as
the whole administration were brought from "The Old Kingdom". Kind of
"carpetbaggers".

I think that some in this group are the same age as Norman Manea and also
went to the Russian school, does anyone remember him?

*** Russian came only after 1944, when Czernowitz became Russian. Between
the wars, many people moved from Czernowitz to "The Old Kingdom". Some
German speaking people moved to Banat (Timisoara) where there was a still a
viable German speaking minority.
