Czernowitzers
A day or so ago I mentioned that there was an Ukrainian internet
newspaper article about us at:

Now Alfred Schneider has provided us with the translation below --
Thanks so much Alfred!

Former Czernowitzers and their descendents popularize the city on the
Internet
It seems that some people who long ago left for another world still
remember the time when Czernivtzi was called Czernowitz and was a
legitimate part of Europe.
Well, even abroad there exists to this day a group of Czernowitzer
people, whose great-great-grandmothers peacefully rest in the cemeteries
of Czernivtzi. They patiently collect and study all photos, documents,
books related to the history of Czernivtzi.
In 1997, three investigators of the genealogy and history of the Jewish
community of Czernivtzi in Canada, USA, and Europe – Bruce Reisch, Karl
Ulrich, Nick Martin - opened a small Internet mailbox with the poetic
name “United Sadagorans. Before long, letters started to arrive from
others interested in their past roots in Czernivtzi, and in 2002 they
opened their own website, thus started an Internet club of former
Czernowitzers and their descendents.
The group has a descriptive name, “Czernowitz-L. Whoever is interested
can
visit: http://czernowitz.ehpes.com. At present, 272 persons are listed,
from America, Europe, Australia, and Israel. The information to be found
there may turn out to be a priceless treasure for students of the
development period of Czernivtzi, because it consists not only of
reminiscences and stories, but also of unique archival material and
photographs.
On the site of the group are old maps of Czernivtzi, paintings, and
family histories contributed by the participants. In fact, anybody who
is interested can become a participant of the group, by merely sending
an
electronic letter. However, you should remember that a foreign language
is required for normal communication. This, indeed, befits a genuine
Czernowitzer.
