I recently attended a lecture given by Paul Shapiro, director for
Advanced Holocaust studies at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington D.C.

The title of the lecture was: The Use of Jewish Sources to Study
the Holocaust: Case Study Romania.

In the course of this lecture I learned that materials created by
Jewish organizations, shadow organizations, communities and
individuals in the period immediately preceding, during and
following the Holocaust, are part of the Holocaust Museum's Jewish
Source Study Initiative (JSSI). In this category the Holocaust
Museum's holdings apparently include 85 000 items about Czernowitz.
Regularly updated information about the JSSI collection is supposedly
available on the internet, from the "Archival Guide to the Collections
of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum" at

  http://ushmm.org/research/center/archguide

I have sent an e-mail message to the archivist, asking for information
about the contents of the collection and how to use the index.
So far I have not received an answer, but when I do, I will send it
to the list. If any of you have information on this subject, would you
please share it with the rest of us?

[Moderator's note: The link above leads to some important
microfilmed materials in the USHMM collection if you search with
terms such as "Czernowitz" or "Bukovina". However, the page above
indicates that the online index has only been updated through
December 2004. Bruce]
