Dear All,
In this message I would like to detail the suggestions for the content and
the program of the proposed meeting, as well as list the names of those who
have volunteered to help in planning and organizing the meeting.
Yehudit Yerushalmi:
New research about Czernowitz. What can and should be our contribution to
the next generations to preserve the heritage and spirit of
Czernowitz and the Bukowina.
Charles Rosner:
I share Yehudit Yerushalmi's proposal No tourism in Israel, but may be a
visit to Yad Vashem or similar.Normally, talking of Cz., we should hold
meetings in <Cz-er Deutsch>:-); but as this is impossible, I suggest we
keep the English language, which is the one we use to
exchange mails on the Cz-List.
Jerry Lapides:
Start with circles of participants, Guest speakers from various generations,
banquet, tours, gathering at Bukowiner house, if there is such a place.
Mimi (Miriam Reifer Taylor):
I would like the program to include talks and discussions about various
topics related to Jewish Czernowitz, in particular I would like
discussion on "What was Czernowitz really like?" and another discussion
on "what Czernowitz values, ideals and customs do we hope to preserve and
to hand down to future generations".
I hope we can also arrange an exhibition of Czernowitz and Bukowina
memorabilia, maps and photographs. Also an exhibition of Czernowitz and
Bukowina - related books in print. It is my hope that Beit Ha-Tfuzot,
Yad va-Shem and the Zionist Archives will all assist us in this.
On the lighter side, I would welcome an evening of Czernowitz anecdotes
and jokes, if possible also a joint meal of Czernowitz style food.
I suggest that this meeting not involve any joint travel arrangements.
I hope that the talks and discussions presented at this meeting can be
recorded, then published as a book, the proceeds of it's sale to go to
the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery preservation fund.
I would further like to suggest, that we decide at the outset;
A) whether the proposed meeting is a public meeting, open to all,
or a private meeting, open only to former Jewish Bukowiner, their
relatives, descendants and close friends.
B) Whether we want to invite paid speakers.
Asher Turtel:
I agree with all the suggestions of Mimi.
Nathan Gross:
Ideas will follow later.
I DO think it is important to arrange at least one organized excursion to
the north of Israel, maybe combined with maybe a visit to Kefar Vradim and
meeting with Steff Wertheimer.
Florence Heymann:
I agree with all the suggestions of Mimi.
Dr. Abraham Shafir( Schaier):
It is important to help the survivors of Czernowitz to publish their
memories, as long as they are in the land of life.
David Weiner:
It is possible to organize one or two tours in Israel.
I suggest that it would be nice to present a family history or one of the
diaries from Bukowinians sent to Transnistria, the like of which we may find
at Yad Vashem. As a special topic, we may present topics from the Bukowinian
cookbook.
Dvorah Netzer:
Of course Yad VaShem and related places are to be included. Content should
include meeting with survivors of Transnistria, and maybe of other places.
Also, maybe families of the people in the group (like an official "reunion"
of all connected.
Veronica Ellran:
I hope that this time people will be more sensitive to the sensitivities
of others, and will respect the decisions taken before the meeting. The
group does not have to witness situations that are disrespectful to any
participant, and cannot be asked to vote pro or against any position of any
other participant. The agenda has to be clear before the meeting starts, and
participants must stick to it.
Names of those who have volunteered to help plan and organize the meeting:
Veronica Ellran
Yehudit Yerushalmi
Jerry Lapides
Danny Alon
Yitzhak Rosner
Nathan Gross
Mimi Taylor
I hope I have not missed anyone, if I have please forgive me and send your
suggestions and offer to help plan and organize, to the Cz.-List.
Even if you have not so far NOT sent your suggestions or offer to help,
it is still not too late to do so.
Best regards ,
Mimi
